Mariah Art Discipline Policy

Our commitment is to provide a place for Mariah Art Students that is safe and friendly. Students are encouraged to respect themselves, classmates and teachers, our school, it's classrooms, processes, and equipment. We promote safety, healthy work habits, pride in completion of class work, and following through with clean up responsibilities. We set limits and guidelines with students in a clear and positive way.

SAFETY IS FIRST
The student's safety is first. Students are never left unattended. Staff follow classroom rules and procedures. Safety issues and concerns will be discussed at monthly staff meetings.

ALL AGES OF STUDENTS: WHEN A STUDENTS ARE AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER STUDENTS ARE IMMEDIATELY SEPERATED

MARIAH ART STAFF WILL NOT USE, SPANKING, SLAPPING, PUSHING OR OTHER FORMS OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT.

TERMINATION OF A STUDENT
If a student has lost self-control or refuses to follow safety rules, the parent will be called for immediate removal.
If the student cannot come into calm respectful state of mind, The Owner Diane Gaile will determine all terminations of students. If unavailable Staff have the right to suspend a child until Diane Gaile is available for a determination.

GENTLE BUT FIRM RESTRAINT TECHNIQUE
A child may be gently, but firmly restrained if he is endangering himself, another person. Staff may gently, but firmly suppress arms and legs if circumstance dictates it. This is the last choice and only for threatening circumstances. As soon as the child shows signs of relaxing and responding then they are release safely and quickly. The parent will be called immediately and asked to pickup their child.

POSITIVE DISCIPLINE FOR AGES 3, 4, & 5
We use a positive approach to classroom discipline by accentuating the positive to eliminate the negative.

  1. Teacher verbally instructs the student to STOP.
  2. Teacher clearly and simply explains why.
  3. Teacher redirects the child's focus or activity.
  4. There are many positive ways in which to handle the situation. The following are suggested methods for the teacher to use. The teacher may give two acceptable choices to do, give a child a look, a touch on the shoulder, or question or reminder about the behavior expected, and in the case of a younger child place the child in lap or next to staff. Accentuate the positive... eliminates the negative. Positive images with words. Instead of "don't stand on the chair", we say "put your feet on the floor". Instead of "don't run", we say "use walking feet". Instead of "stop yelling" we say "use quiet voices" or "lower your voices" while motioning with hands.

DISCIPLINE CHOICES FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS: We are committed to guiding our students in how to solve problems themselves. When the staff discovers there may be a problem between students, staff will use the following procedures:

  1. DISCUSS WITH STUDENTS IF THERE IS A PROBLEM.
  2. INVOLVED STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM.
  3. STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS. AS STUDENTS LEARN THIS CONCEPT THEY ARE ASKED IF THEY CAN SOLVE THE PROBLEM THEMSELVES OR DO THEY NEED STAFF HELP. THEY OFTEN CHOOSE HANDILING IT THEMSELVES.
  4. STUDENTS ARE ASKED IF THEY ARE READY TO CORRECT THE BEHAVIOR AND TAKE RESPONSIBLITY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Parent Rights And Responsibilities - Parent Communication

Parents can inform Mariah Art of any circumstances that may change your child's behavior on any given day. Parents must call Mariah at 357-9188 or leave a dated note in the office INBOX with any schedule changes or if a different person is picking up your child. All persons picking up must be written on list. Photo Identification for unknown pick-up persons is required.

PARENT FILES are located in the office with your child's name on it; Mariah Art School uses these files to communicate with parents, and parents may use them communicate with each other.

If your child's name is highlighted on the SIGN IN/OUT sheet that means there is information in your PARENT FILE for you.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE PROCEDURES

IT'S THE LAW: PARENTS OR GUARDIANS SIGN STUDENTS IN & OUT

  • In accordance with state regulations and insurance an adult over the age of 18 must accompany the student to and from the building. It is against the law to leave a child in the car under the age of 12.
  • On arrival, check your child's name, write arrival time and FULL SIGNATURE, FIRST & LAST NAME
  • When departing, write the departure time and sign the sheet WITH FULL SIGNATURE
  • A parent/guardian must sign an authorized release form for a child to be released to anyone other than themselves.

According to WAC 388- 295-2020, children are not to remain in care in excess of ten (10) hours per day.

Parents may access areas in which their child is located during business hours. Parents must check with staff and be as discreet as possible during a visit. A parent may call any time during business hours. Unless we have a court order in the student's file with parental rights revoked both parent have access to the child, and his or her education and financial records at all times.

MEDICATION

Parents have ultimate responsibility for proper administration of medication to their child. Mariah Art School shall give medications, prescription and non-prescription, only on the written approval of parent, person or agency having authority by court order to approve medical care. Medications must be given to the staff by the parent to be placed in the medication box above the refrigerator. PARENTS MUST FILL OUT OUR MEDICATION FORM IN ORDER FOR US TO ADMINISTER ANY MEDICATION, PRESCRIPTION AND NON-PRESCRIPTION.

Mariah Art School will only accept medicine in the ORIGINAL LABELED CONTAINER.

  • NO unlabeled bottles, pills in a baggie, or any other form of container.
  • Students may not bring medicine in lunches or back backpacks.
  • Vitamins and other supplements may not be brought to Mariah Art.

CLOTHING

MESSY - Please understand that we are an art school and we do get our clothing messy. A child cannot fully participate if they are worried about their clothing.

SHOES - We require well fitting shoes that kids can run, jump and play in. PLEASE NO FLIP-FLOPS

TOY POLICY

WE PREFER THAT TOYS BE LEFT AT HOME.
Many times toys interrupt the learning environment. If your child has a SOFT comfort toy that will help put them at ease it is OK to bring it to school. Please let your child know that they will be asked during certain activities to put the toy in their cubby. A good rule of thumb about toys: If your child wants to bring a toy to school, they must be willing to SHARE IT, BREAK IT or possibly LOSE IT. If a particular toy becomes a problem we will keep it in the office and let the parent/guardian know that it is no longer allowed it to be brought to school.

FOOD

Mariah Art provides a snack for After School Students Only. Parents or Guardians provide food for Preschool, Kindergarten, and Art Camps Students. Snacks and lunches must follow according to Department of Health guidelines. Following are the guidelines. Gentle written reminders will be given to parents when guidelines are not followed.

Foods to be provided by parent /guardian:
PRESCHOOL STUDENTS: 1 snack
KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS: Lunch and 2 snacks, water bottle
ART CAMP STUDENTS: Lunch and 2 snacks, water bottle

Department of Health Daily Food Requirements

  • SNACK: 1 fruit and/or 1 vegetable plus one other food group like cheese, grains (bread, cereal, crackers, and pasta) or protein (cheese, nuts, peanut butter or meat)
  • LUNCH: 1 fruit and vegetable, 1 protein source (cheese, nuts, peanut butter or meat) and 1 grain product (bread, crackers, cereal, rice, pasta)

If your child does not have the above foods in their lunch -or- your child runs out of lunch, a reminder notice will be sent home in the lunch box.

The following foods may not be brought to Mariah Art:

  • Gum
  • Candy, ANY foods in which the main ingredient is sugar, heavily sugared cakes and cookies (such as Twinkie's and Ding Dongs)
  • Pop, Soda, or carbonated beverages

A rule of thumb food for parents:

  • Food that is high in sugar or salt is not healthy for children. Even some of the dried fruit is full of sugar, sticks to the teeth, and causes tooth decay.
  • The best foods are fresh fruit, vegetables, and grains. Highly processed foods are full of dies, chemicals and hydrogenated oils, which are not healthy for children-or adults for that matter!
WE REALLY ARE WHAT WE EAT, HEALTHY EATING HABITS MAKE FOR STRONG MINDS THAT ARE READY TO LEARN!

Birthday Celebrations: Pre-arrange birthday celebrations with staff.

Mariah Collaborative Arts Preschool 2006 - 2007

Mariah Art provides a well-balanced program addressing all the child's needs.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

ART & LETTER AND READING DEVELOPMENT
At alphabet circle time we teach line directions using our whole body, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, radiating and parallel lines to draw letters. Next, while one teacher reads from the Monclure Alphabet books series, the other teacher draws ideas from the story. Students receive their own sketchbooks to use at circle only and at the end of the year they take them home. This allows families to see a real progression in learning. Students also practice forming letters using the techniques from the Writing With Out Tears Program. Letter and word recognition are practiced with flash cards and words dispersed around the room. For beginning letter writing we also use a dot-to-dot technique.

ART & MATH By its very nature art is all about measuring, estimating, finding the middle, large, medium and small; for example how to make a snow person out of clay. Adding and subtracting is very natural when working in clay. Whether creating patterns of colors on a dragon's tale, counting out shells or pumpkins, students are exploring math concepts. Writing numbers is practiced using the Writing Without Tears Program.

ART & SCIENCE Seasons, plants & gardening, animals, humans, habitats, houses, transportation, recycling, machines, earth, space, differences & similarities, light & dark, liquid & solid, float & sink. Larger science concepts: gravity, states of matter, energy, weight & mass. Hands on experiential learning every time.

ART AND SMALL MUSCLE DEVELOPMENT
The opportunities in art are endless for strengthening small muscles. Our best tools are our hands. If children have strength and coordination, when they form letters it is done with more accuracy and ease. We use many types media; blending, smoothing, cutting, poking and shading techniques to create. Manipulating clay tools strengthens hands.

ART/ MUSIC/ THEATER/ MOVEMENT
During music and theater we are always moving. They are many varied opportunities for exercise and movement; Creative movement, gymnastic, yoga, Brain Gym, sports, outdoor play at Woodruff Park, Nature walks in the neighborhood, Backyard recess, dramatic play, blocks, puzzles, jump roping, obstacle course, group games, parachute and tunnel crawl, and more.

ART & MATH
By its very nature art is all about measuring, estimating, finding the middle, large, medium and small; for example how to make a snow person out of clay. Adding and subtracting is very natural when working in clay. Whether creating patterns of colors on a dragon's tale, counting out shells or pumpkins, students are exploring math concepts. Writing numbers is practiced using the Writing Without Tears Program.

ART & SCIENCE
Seasons, plants & gardening, animals, humans, habitats, houses, transportation, recycling, machines, earth, space, differences & similarities, light & dark, liquid & solid, float & sink.
