Collaborative Arts Preschool
Ages 3 - 5

Mariah Art provides a well-balanced program addressing all the child's needs.

Cognitive Development

Art & Letter And Reading Development At alphabet circle time we teach line directions using our whole body, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, radiating and parallel lines to draw letters. Next, while one teacher reads from the Monclure Alphabet books series, the other teacher draws ideas from the story. Students receive their own sketchbooks to use at circle only and at the end of the year they take them home. This allows families to see a real progression in learning. Students also practice forming letters using the techniques from the Writing With Out Tears Program. Letter and word recognition are practiced with flash cards and words dispersed around the room. For beginning letter writing we also use a dot-to-dot technique.

Art & Math By its very nature art is all about measuring, estimating, finding the middle, large, medium and small; for example how to make a snow person out of clay. Adding and subtracting is very natural when working in clay. Whether creating patterns of colors on a dragon's tale, counting out shells or pumpkins, students are exploring math concepts. Writing numbers is practiced using the Writing Without Tears Program.

Art & Science Seasons, plants & gardening, animals, humans, habitats, houses, transportation, recycling, machines, earth, space, differences & similarities, light & dark, liquid & solid, float & sink. Larger science concepts: gravity, states of matter, energy, weight & mass. Hands on experiential learning every time.

Art And Small Muscle Development The opportunities in art are endless for strengthening small muscles. Our best tools are our hands. If children have strength and coordination, when they form letters it is done with more accuracy and ease. We use many types media; blending, smoothing, cutting, poking and shading techniques to create. Manipulating clay tools strengthens hands.

Art/ Music/ Theater/ Movement During music and theater we are always moving. They are many varied opportunities for exercise and movement; Creative movement, gymnastic, yoga, Brain Gym, sports, outdoor play at Woodruff Park, Nature walks in the neighborhood, Backyard recess, dramatic play, blocks, puzzles, jump roping, obstacle course, group games, parachute and tunnel crawl, and more.
